Military authorities sold bamboos for personal interests
13 July 2005: Military authorities in Chin state reportedly sold a huge number of bamboos, which were collected from local residents, Sitwe town, and capital of Arakan state in Burma.
According to villager (withheld name for security reason) from Salanpi village, Captain Myo Nwe from the sub-division of Light Infantry battalion (289) currently station in Shinletwa Village of Paletwa Township, southern part of Chin state sold ten thousand bamboos to Sitwe town for his own personal benefits.
"It was a terrible thing that the bamboos have been sold for his owns pocket instead of fencing the military camp. It was an unjust toward the people", explained a village from Salanpi.
The Captain Myo Nwe called the nine village heads, from the nearby villages of Shinletwa for a meeting in the last week of May and ordered the village heads to collect bamboos for fencing the military camp.
The Captain also fixed the number of Bamboos to be provides by each village for the fencing of the Shinletwa military camp and put a deadline as June 5.
Military authority collected (1000) bamboos from Salangpui,(1500) from Ma Oo, (800) from Saiha, (2000) from Pawngmu, (1500) from Datwekyaut, (1000) from Khung, (1500) from Shweletwa,(2000) from Marahland and (2500) from Pathentlang villages respectively.
The current price of bamboo range between 10 to15 Kyat (Burma currency), in Matupi Township and Paletwa area. Therefore, the values of the bamboos sold to Sitwe by military authority are estimated to reach about 13000 Kyats.
Money extortion and collecting from the residents occurs on a daily basis in Chin state since Rangon government introduced self-reliance program for each military divisions in the frontline area. KNG
