The SPDC Tea Plantation Planning not Blooming

25 July 2005: The tea plantation initiated by various Governmental department and individual in Tedim town of northern Chin state, is reportedly not successful.

A man from Tedim lament in Mizoram, "Probably due to unfavorable climate, unsuitable soil for tea, the plantation is not that successful. Meanwhile, the government forcibly made us to work in this plantation. I could not understand; our strength and resources are wasteful".

 

He told the Khonumthung that all the department of the government were made to plant tea in an acre of land and the government servants were made to work in the plantation once every month by the order of the Town Peace and Development Council (TPDC) chairman.

 

The armies stationed in the town were also allotted land for tea plantation. However, the army did not work in the plantation but summon people from the four blocks of the town to work in the plantation as they wish.

 

The people from the four blocks were made to work in the army allotted tea plantation under the leadership of the Block Peace and Development Council members. Sick people were exempted from the work but other who fails to go for the work was penalized with a fined of 4000 – 5000 Kyats.

 

The Education department of Tedim let the students work in the tea plantation allotted to the department was forced to bring one vessel (about 1.50 Kilograms) of chicken of buffalo or cow dropping for fertilizer in the tea plantation.

 

The workers in the tea plantation were made to weed the surroundings, fetch wood and thatch and roofed the tea plants etc. They were made to work in the plantation twice a month by the least.

 

Most of the tea plantations are locate about two miles away from Tedim, mostly in the government land. The SPDC forced the students, government employees and the local people to work in tea plantation since 2002 with intention to make Chin state a State of Tea Estate. KNG
