Health deterioration and religious of the detained Chin refugees in Malaysia
3 June 2006: The Health situation of the Chin refugees imprisoned in Legging and Semuyit camps are reportedly deteriorated. These Chin refugees were reported apprehended and detained since early this year.
The Malay authority of Lenggeng and semuyit camps does not provide proper diet to the detained Chin refugees, which result in the gradual deterioration of the detainees health. Improper nutrition and salty food reportedly had swollen the body of most of the detainees. A handful of rice and salty fish is provided twice a day and sometimes wormed salty fish and stinky chicken livers were served, reports San Aung, a Malaysia's Chin Refugee Committee member.
The Malaysia's Chin Refugee Committee visited Lenggeng and Semuyit camps yesterday. This visitors report that majority of the Chin refugees are Christian by faith and were being often denied their religious rights by the camps authorities. The detainees were often made to fall in- in the time for fellowships and prayers of the Christians. The entry of Bible in the prison camps is prohibited, reports San Aung.
The Chin refugees reported told our source," Malaysia authorities accused the Christians as Liars".
The prison Camps authorities justify their misbehaviors and improper nutrition of the refugees as s better chance for their earlier release, when bleated by visitors. Meanwhile, the detainees were never contented with the less food provided to them, said a Chin Refugees Committee Official.
Medical officers often conduct routine medical examination in the prison camps. The prison camps authorities confiscated the free medicines provided to the detainees, and when medicines were requested for illness, wrong medicines were often issued medicines for scabies for stomach and vice versus. The prison camps authorities challenged the detainees the source the camps, as the Malaysia United Nations High Commission for Refugees did not recognize them as a refugee.
The Malaysia Authority reportedly apprehended and detained 200 Chin refugees in Lenggeng camp and 800 in Semuyint camp as illegal immigrants. Some detainees where reported known to signed a promise to return to the Thailand border due to the intolerable tortures from the prison camps authorities.
Since the pro-democracy agitation in 1988, people from Chin state refuge and seek asylum in various country. Maximum numbers of the Chin refugees reportedly settled in India while Malaysia is opined to the second country where more refugees are expected to settle. KNG
