Private vehicle commandeered for police use

18 August 2006: The high handedness of the police department in Chin State Burma is reflected in the manner in which it commandeered a private vehicle for fitting the department’s radio transmitter in early August.

Late reports suggest that the police department in Thantlang town, Chin state, Burma, seized the private jeep of Mr. Tumsang to Lungler on August 4. The jeep commandeered was reportedly forced to transport a radio transmitter along with five or six police personnel.

The owner of the vehicle received six gallons from the security forces as charges for the vehicle’s use. However, the total diesel consumed over two ways on trips between Thatlang and Lungler was 15 gallons.

The radio transmitter in Lungler had been out of order for the past two years. The government of Burma issued a new transmitter to replace the old one recently. -KNG
