Landslides disrupt vehicular traffic on Hakha-Mandalay road
22 August 2007: Vehicular traffic has been disrupted on the road linking Hakha town, capital of Chin state and Mandalay, second capital of Burma, because of landslides triggered by heavy rain.
The Hakha – Mandalay road via Gangaw town in Magwey division has been blocked by land slides 19 miles from Hakha since August 13.
The passengers from Hakha have to take an alternative route to Mandalay via the Kalay – Monywa road. However, Hakha- Kalay– Monywa– Mandalay road not only takes more time but also become more expensive than traveling along the road passing through Gangaw.
"Hakha-Mandalay buses via Gangaw cannot operate as the road is blocked by landslides. The passengers are traveling along the Kalay – Monywa road. Traveling along this road takes time and is more expensive," a local in Chin state said.
"The authorities in Hakha have instructed road construction engineers to start removing the obstacle with drilling machines. However, we don't know when they will finish," he added.
The Hakha-Mandalay main road via Gangaw is 200 miles and it takes one day to cover it.
The Chin Taung Tan and Golden Lion bus lines operate along this road. The bus lines charge Kyat 12,000 (US $ 9.230) per passenger. At least 100 passengers travel by these buses daily.
Similarly, Haka-Thantlng main road has also been damaged, and the bus cannot operate three times a day as is usual. It runs once a day. The distance between Haka and Thantlang is about 20 miles.
Land slides are common in Chin state in monsoon. As a result, bus fares and essential commodity prices go up. Khonumthung
