Pro-democracy activists in India lend support to demonstrations in Burma

23 August 2007 - Burmese pro-democracy activists in New Delhi today held a rally to express solidarity for the ongoing peaceful protests over fuel price increase across Burma.

The activists demanded the immediate release of demonstrators including prominent activists Min Ko Naing and Ko Ko Kyi arrested by the junta.

The Burmese in exile also blamed the junta's thugs of the Union Solidarity and Development Association (USDA) and the Swan-Ah-Shin for launching attacks on peaceful demonstrators including girls and women. 

Meanwhile, around 20 Burmese students briefly held a demonstration in front of the Burmese embassy in Singapore amid restrictions by the police today.

Yesterday, Burmese from USA and UK had also called for the release of arrested demonstrators and held rallies to support the march over fuel price hike in Burma.

88 generation student leaders and other demonstrators on Wednesday were arrested by authorities for the peaceful march in Rangoon over the sudden fuel price hike that led to the rise in prices of essential commodity in Burma.

Burmese military government suddenly increased the price of petroleum products by 100 percent in Rangoon on August 14 sparking an outcry among people in Burma.  

The junta's mouth piece, New Light of Myanmar, yesterday said the authorities had arrested 13 members from among 88 generation students group including the most prominent activist Min Ko Naing and Ko Ko Kyi for their agitation aimed at causing civil unrest and to disrupt the ongoing National Convention in Burma.

Despite detention of student leaders more than 500 activists including women activists held peaceful protests on the streets in different areas of Rangoon yesterday.

The demonstrators were beaten and arrested by junta backed organizations such as USDA and Swan-Ah-Shin. Some of the arrested protesters were later released.

The protests are also said to be spreading to other cities like Yenan Chaung town in Magwe division, upper Burma today. Some protestors in Rangoon were also arrested.

Moreover, U Ohn Than, former political prisoner, held a solo protest in front of the American embassy in Rangoon today urging the soldiers to stand on the people's side and to repulse the junta. Shortly after, the police came and took him away.   

Western democratic countries such as the USA and UK called for the Burmese junta to free the arrested pro-democracy activists.

Human Right Watch also condemned the junta for using violent means to suppress the peaceful demonstrators. – Khonumthung.
