Burmese mark Human Rights Day in Mizoram

December 11, 2007 - The 59th International Human Rights Day was observed by Burmese democracy activists in the Engineering Club in Aizawl, capital of Mizoram state, north east India yesterday.

Burmese children participated in painting competition organized by HREIB and WLC in Mizoram state, northeast India mark 59th Internation Human Rights Day.

"We want Burmese migrant workers to be aware of the history of how people came to mark the International Human Rights Day", Ko Thwe, community organizer from Human Right and Education Institute (Burma) HREIB said.

IHR day was organized by HREIB and around 50 migrant workers from Burma and a few activists of NGOs in Mizoram attended the function.

The Women's League of Chinland (WLC), co-organizer of the IHR day function in Mizoram, issued a statement welcoming the international women community and calling on the Burmese junta to release women political prisoners in Burma.

WLC urged the Burmese regime to halt violence against Chin women and demanded the immediate release of political prisoners in Burma.

WLC condemned the Burmese regime for detaining democracy leader Aung San Suu Kyi and other women human right activists like Ni Lar Thein, Tin Moe Lwin, Phyu Phyu Thin, Ni Moe Hlaing and May Thitsar for their struggle for democracy and human rights in Burma. 

On December 8, HREIB also organized a painting and song competition that mark IHR day in Aizawl. – Khonumthung.
