Burmese students top Mizoram's primary board examinations

December 22, 2007 - Two children of Burmese migrant workers studying in a primary school in Khatla Quart in Aizawl, capital of Mizoram state, northeast India topped the final board examination in 2007.

The Mizoram primary school's board examination results were declared on Thursday. Two Burmese students Zo Sanga (alias) Kyaw Kyaw Zin and Aung May Oo passed with distinction in six subjects. The former student was in the first place with 508 out of 550 marks and the latter was in the second position with 502 marks.

Kyaw Kyaw Zin is the son of U Soe Lwin and Aung May Oo is the daughter of U Ne Win. Both the parents of the students are working in the weaving industry in Aizawl.

"As soon as I heard the announcement through a loud speaker that my son had got the top position in Mizoram, I was happy but it is very hard to express how happy I was at that moment", said Daw San Tint, mother of Kyaw Kyaw Zin.

The teachers in the school where the two Burmese students are studying were also proud of the Burmese student's excellent achievement.

Because of financial constraints, most Burmese migrant workers in Mizoram send their children to government schools that waive monthly fees.

"If possible we want our children to have their education in English medium private schools, but in this condition, we can only place our children in government schools", said Daw San Tint.

Over 3,000 thousand primary students from the state had sat for the final board examination for 2007 in Mizoram. – Khonumthung.
