Junta provides free tuition for students in Chin state

December 3, 2007 - In a rare but benevolent gesture the Burmese military junta's administration in Chin state, Burma has begun to give free tuitions to students of high schools in Falam since November.

Township Peace and Development Council office in Falam Township (TPDC) office selected teachers believed to be excellent, from No (1) and (2) high schools in Falam town, Chin state and assigned them to teach the students in what is being called a free tuition class.

"Some students from economically poor backgrounds are delighted to attend free of charge tuition classes as they cannot afford private tuitions at high fees," a local in Falam said.

In Chin state private tutorials have mushroomed. However, most students from low income groups are not able to afford private tuitions as the charges are very high.

Around 70 students are attending TPDC's free tuition class in Falam. The class is supposed to continue till the final nation wide board examinations for high school level students in 2008.

This is the first time the Burmese junta has ever provided free tuition classes for high school students in Chin state. – Khonumthung.
