Junta orders dismantling of hotel in Chin State

July 26, 2007: Suspecting locals of providing shelter to an ethnic rebel group, Myanmar authorities have ordered a hotel owner in Chin state, to close and dismantle the hotel.

U Ong Maung, president of Township Peace and Development Council in Falam district directed the hotel owner Zun Cung Nung to dismantle his hotel and shift to another place in the last week of May. The authorities suspected that cadres of the Chin Nation Army (CNA) were taking shelter in the hotel.

The hotel is located between Tlauhmun and Khuasum village 20 miles from Falam Town.

"Zung Cung Nung's family is hesitant to shift elsewhere as they had already settled here," said a local in Falam town.

"In case of moving to another place, Pu Zun Cung Nung will lose not only a hotel but also his estate and farmland", added a local in Falam.

The TPDC's order did not mention the deadline to dismantle the hotel and neither has it earmarked a place for him to relocate.

Pu Zun Cung Nung set up the hotel and grew vegetables in his farmland with the permission of U Khin Maung Tint, president of the TPDC in Falam Township since 2003.

"This incident shows the nature of the newly appointed officials in Myanmar who have reluctantly taken up the plans and projects decided by the outgoing officials," said a local in Chin state. - Khonumthung.
