Eight die of dysentery on Indo–Myanmar border
June 5, 2007: Dysentery has claimed eight lives in villages on both sides of the Indo-Myanmar border areas.
Ko Naing (23), his younger brother, and their father, Thei Cai (62) died in Sabaute village in Matupi Township. Two villagers in Lo Oo, Thantlang Township in Chin state, Myanmar and three villagers in Cakhang in Mizoram state, India died of dysentery, a local on the border said.
Ko Naing fell ill in Hakha when he came from lower Myanmar. He died when he arrived in Cawngthia village, Thantlang Township on Sunday.
The body was carried to Sabaute village but it infected his father and younger brother. They died the next day. His younger sister is affected and her condition is serious.
Unfortunately, there are no medicines in the village to cure her. The family had to purchase medicines from Tuanpang village in Mizoram.
Mr. Unity from the community based Health Care Program said, “It can be called dysentery as every patient has loose motion, but it cannot confirmed what it really is. Now the disease is spreading in the region.”
The disease has also spread In Matupi but there are no casualties. In these areas the decease occurs every year from March to June. But there are not enough medicines to prevent and cure the disease. It is an annual curse for the villagers.
Last month, there was bird flu outbreak in Chin state and it infected chicken in remote areas. – KNG.
