Mizo social group condemns killing of Chin woman in Mizoram

June 14, 2007: The National Domestic Workers Movement Welfare Trust (NDWMWT) in Mizoram, in a statement issued on Tuesday, condemned the killing of a migrant woman worker from Chin state, Myanmar and termed the act as despicable which ignores the value of human life.

Bawineisung hailing from Chin state who worked as a domestic help was murdered by unknown persons in M.C Malsawma's house in Zarkawt block in Aizawl, capital of Mizoram state, northeast India while the house owners had gone out on Sunday.

"We strongly condemn the crime, killing a house keeper mercilessly regardless of human considerations," said Marka Lalsangliana, Assistant Director of NDWMWT.

"The work of domestic helps in Mizoram is a full time job. We can hardly find part time work for them," Marka Lalsanglaina added.

NDWMWT's called for immediate action and arrest of the culprits.

The Mizoram police is interrogating 14 Indian nationals who live near the house where the Chin woman was murdered. Among them, five Indian nationals are being detained for further questioning.

According to the NDWMWT, there are around 700 domestic helps from Burma registered with the Farendo Integrated Women Development Centre (FIWD) a working partner of the NDWMWT.

FIWD is running a Peace Home in Dultlang in Aizawl where they provide a kind of qualification build up like training on sewing, and cooking among other things. FIWD also provides voluntary service to solve problems faced by domestic helps.

NDWMWT also provides training to empower women to promote women's rights and to secure the life and safety of women. – KNG.
