Seven houses demolished to make way for college building

June 4, 2007: Seven houses belonging to civilians have been demolished by Burmese military junta authorities to make way for a college building in Hakha, the capital of Chin State, Myanmar.

The college building will be constructed on the junction of Thantlang and Falam Road close to the ‘Welcome’ signboard. Excavation for the foundation was completed in the last week of May and a prayer ceremony held by Buddhist monks from Hakha city.

The authorities ordered demolition of the seven houses of civilians near the place excavated. Three houses belonged to Mr. ZaPiang, Mr. Liantum, Pastor Ngunkhar. The four other houses will be demolished soon.

Pastor Ngunkhar has purchased a new house and moved in. Mr. Zapiang has got a new land which was given by the president of TPDC for construction of house while Mr. Liantum is having trouble constructing a house in the old place without permission (LSC). The authorities have confiscated his house and land. So he has rented a temporary house.

“Now the authorities have ordered not to give any new land to those who have no land pass. That’s why they are facing problems. We don’t know how they will manage. It is sad that they were deprived of their land,” a local in Hakha said.

The authorities are yet to announce whether the students can start classes in the month of June in the new building of college.

“We cannot predict when the building will be completed. If it is finished at the time of opening the school teachers are available for all subjects. A library is also needed along with another building. I think classes cannot start this year,” a school teacher in Hakha said.

If the authorities can construct the college building at par with the standard of a college like Khaikam in Kalemyo, Sagaing Division, Chin students have no need to go elsewhere to attend college. But if the authorities cannot do that then Chin students will have to continue to go to Khaikam College. - KNG
