Burmese migrants donate blood to Mizoram hospital
March 19, 2007: A Burmese social group and the Christian Association donated blood to the Civil Hospital in Aizawl, Mizoram state, on the Indo-Burma border last weekend.
The Mizoram based Burmese Christian Church Association and the Burmese Social Group led the blood donation drive.
Forty three members arrived in the hospital but 21 men and one woman could donate blood. The other 22 members did not qualify during blood tests.
The Aizawl Civil Hospital conducted blood tests on all the members and only after that they donated blood.
"The Burmese people have to avail hospital services. It is difficult to get blood when we need it. Sometimes the hospital gives us blood. We hope that if we donate blood to the hospital we will get more benefits in the future. That is why we came and donated blood," said the president of Burmese Social Group, Ko Zaw Thun to Khonumthung News.
The blood donation started at 11a.m. with the help of hospital officials. Most donors were from among Burmese weavers and goldsmiths and workers in gold shops.
Regarding the blood donation a hospital nurse said, "We are happy that Burmese workers donated blood to this hospital."
The Burmese Social group Secretary and All Burma Student Union member Ko Thuin said that the Burmese people in Mizoram are blamed for crime and illegal use and export of drugs. "By organizing the blood donation we wanted to prove that not all the Burmese are bad and there are honest people among them in Mizoram. We hope that our good deed will reflect this viewpoint to the Mizo people.
There were 50 names in the list of donors but most are not in good health.
