Rice destroyed by insects, price may go up

16 March 2007: The price of rice may shoot up next month because insects have destroyed a lot of rice stocked in the stores in Kalay Myo, Sagaing Division.

A farmer from Kalay Myo said that the rice which was stored after procuring it from farmers was destroyed by a kind of rice insect. Now when they grind 100 tins of rice only 25 tins are produced. Previously they used to produce 50 tins from grinding 100 tins of rice.

The price of rice in the market is Kyat 15,000 and it can jump up to Kyat 25,000 from next month. Although there has been no fall in the quantum of rice produced the insects have destroyed a lot of rice in the stores. Now some families of farmers are storing their own rice. But it will not be enough to last them the whole year.

"We don't know how to handle this situation. The insects are eating all the rice in the stores. We don't know what kind of pesticide should be used to control the pests. We are just watching," said an entrepreneur to Khonumthung News.

A report said that the insects are eating rice in the stores of Kalay Myo, Tahan, Tamu and Zohmun areas. This is a sign that there could be drought.

A farmer said that on the border of Chin state and Mizoram the Indian government has tried to prevent drought between 2006 and 2008. But the government of Burma (Myanmar) has no plans to prevent drought. That is the reason the farmers are facing trouble now.

Besides, in Chin state border areas Paletwa, Matupi, ThanTlang, Falam, Tedim and Tonzang townships produced less rice this year because of weather condition. Because of this they have already started purchasing rice from the Mizoram border.

Some villagers of Chin state have asked for financial assistance from foreign workers to purchase rice from Mizoram and store in their villages.

The people are now frustrated without any help from the government of Burma (Myanmar).

A visitor to the border said, "The government never helps the people. It is hopeless even if we ask for help. They only know what to take from the people. They never give anything to the people. Therefore we don't expect help from the government." - KNG.
