Nine Burmese workers deported

May 23, 2007: Nine Burmese nationals arrested on May 16 by authorities of Mizoram state in India, were deported today.

The Mizoram police and Village Defence Party (VDP) arrested 14 Myanmarese workers form ‘Sang Sang’ Restaurant in Aizawl for illegally staying in Mizoram. But of the 14, five were released later. The rest have been sent back to the Indo-Myanmar border.

"We don't know up to which place they will be sent. It will be a problem if they are sent to the army check post on the Myanmar side. We don't know what is going on with them. We are worried about their safety," a Myanmarese from Aizawl told Khonumthung News.

They were taken to the Indo-Myanmar border town of Champhai in a Mizoram police car, after which they have to head for Indo-Myanmar road No. 2 in Rihkhawdar town in Chin state.

But it cannot be ascertained whether they will be sent back to Myanmar authorities. This is the first time that Burmese workers are being sent back to the border this year. – KNG.
