The military government is also planning to modify the 100-mile road in Kalay Township as highway No. (100). The authorities have informed the local people on April 14 to shift so that the buildings standing along the roadside of Kalay-Tahan can be pulled down, according to a Kalay local.

Kalay airport is to be upgraded to international standards. The authorities took the decision on May 7 to shift over 300 households adjacent to the airport to other places.

"The victims are under severe stress and pressure because they believe there is no way they will get compensation for their property," a local from Kalay told Khonumthung News.

The authorities were said to have arranged a new block for the victims of road and airport modification work. But so far, no one knows the locality of the new block or whether they will get compensation.

Though the military authorities have just informed the locals to move they are yet to announce the date to start work on modification of the road and the airport.

The owners of houses to be demolished are puzzled. They do not where to go and when they will be shifted.

The Kalay airport was revamped in 2004 where locals were forced to cut grass everyday. A person who did not cut grass had to pay between Kyat 200 to 300 as penalty.

On a daily basis, F-27, and F-28 Fokker aircraft connect Kalay airport to Mandalay town, the second capital of Myanmar. The renovation of the airport is being taken up in order to press into service larger aircraft. – KNG.
