Policeman killed, another seriously injured in brawl

May 9, 2007: A policeman was killed and another was seriously injured in a brawl between two police personnel and locals in Tawnzang Township northern Chin state, Myanmar on May 3. The policeman, who was knifed, died on the spot.

Ko Ming Than from Zomi Human Rights Foundation said that Din Khaw Mang and Thang Nei, two police personnel from Gikha police station went to Tui Mui village to investigate illegal logging. Meanwhile, the two police personnel tried to grab chickens belonging to the villagers without paying money. Angry villagers attacked the police.

In the brawl that took place Thang Nei was slashed with a knife in the abdomen and died on the spot. Din Khaw mang was seriously injured and was taken to Tidim hospital. His condition is serious, Ko Ming Than added.

The authorities arrested the president of Tui Mui, U Din Khan Suan and took him to Gikha army camp to investigate the incident.

The two policemen not only tried to catch the villagers’ chickens but created some problems in a wine shop. That is why the villagers lost their cool.

Ko Min Than said that the villagers who were involved in the brawl ran away to the Indo-Myanmar border area with the weapons of the policemen. So far no one knows their whereabouts.

The superintendent of police from Hakha, capital of Chin state, arrived in Gikha to investigate the killing.

Policemen and army personnel on duty in the border areas of Chin state are known to rob and steal chicken, pigs belonging to people and sometimes they slaughter other domestic animals too.

In May 2005, locals and policemen clashed in Matupi Township in southern Chin state. Two policemen died on the spot and one was seriously injured. – KNG.
