Storm damages school and houses in Chin State

May 24, 2007: A cyclonic storm sweeping Thantlang town of Chin state, Myanmar damaged a school and six houses on May 7 2007.

A Thantlang local said that 100 sheets of aluminum roofing of a high school and 50 sheets of roofing of the middle school were blown off by the heavy storm which lasted from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m.

The military government has made arrangements to reconstruct the damaged buildings but no one knows when work will start. The people are anxious to know whether the reconstruction work will be finished before the school reopens in June.

“So far there has been no action from the government. But it is learnt that the government will begin reconstruction before the school reopens,” he said.

The market price of aluminum roofing is Rs 6000 to Rs. 8000 a sheet and it is difficult to finish repair work before the school reopens in June, he added.

Besides, the storm destroyed six houses in Thantlang town too. The government has promised to provide assistance to the families but they have not mentioned when they will give the money.

There are 1,500 students in the high school section and about 800 students in middle school in Thantlang Town, Chin state. – KNG.
