Rain spoils junta rally

October 8, 2007 - Heavy downpour in Chin state, Burma ruined the military junta's plans of holding a mass rally in support of the outcome of its National Convention -- part of the junta's seven-point road map to its own kind of democracy in the country.

The junta had geared up to hold the rally, meant to be held today in Hakha, Chin state. It is likely to be postponed to a sunny day.

"Because of bad weather, they canceled the rally today. They have said the rally will be held as soon as the weather improves," a local in Hakha said.

The local authorities in Chin state last week ordered two members from each household to attend a rally to be held in 'Vumtu Maung' play ground in Hakha.

"Most of the people are likely to participate in the rally as they are being forced," the local added.

The rallies to support the outcome of the NC are being organized by the military regime in different places in Burma after the violent crack down on anti-government demonstrators across the country which left over 200 dead. Thousands of monks and protesters were arrested.

The National Convention began in 1993 as a part of the regime's seven-step road map to "a disciplined democracy". It was wrapped up 14 years later on September 3, 2007. – Khonumthung.
