Burmese soldiers extort money from bus drivers

September 11, 2007 - Troops of the Burma Army have been extorting money from buses transporting goods and passengers on the road linking Chin state and Sagaing Division in Burma.

Major Win Shwe of the Light Infantry Battalion (268) stationed in Falam town, Chin state, was said to have set up a mobile military outpost in Taingen village about 25 miles from Tedim town between September 4 and 10, a local from Tedim said.

From the so called temporary outpost on Tedim – Kalay Road, Major Win Shwe and his colleagues allegedly collected Kyat 50,000 (US $ 37.59) from buses crossing the out post, a trader from Chin state said.

"They (Burmese soldiers) said that the money being collecting from every bus coming from Kalay was for army rations", said a traveller from Chin state who arrived on the Indo-Burma border.

"Some bus drivers who could not pay what was asked for, were forcibly detained and made to stay at outpost for four or-five days, delaying their trip," he added.

Passengers of the detained vehicles were said to have got angry with the army and faced a lot of trouble on the way.

Approximately, around 20 buses transport goods and passengers on the 50- mile long Kalay – Tedim Road daily. – Khonumthung.
