Chin Women pray for peace in Burma

September 29, 2007 - Chin women started daily prayer service in Hakha, capital of Chin state, Burma for love, peace and an end to the brutal crackdown by the military regime against protesters including monks on the streets across the country.

"Our prayer is for the people to love each other and not to be violent to each other," a participant in the prayer service said.

At least 50 people are involved in the prayer service which began on September 28 from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. (Burma Standard Time) in churches in Hakha.

The date of conclusion of the prayer service is not known yet but those praying will start fasting from Monday.

There are no reports of prayer service in other towns of Chin state.

The military regime's brutal crackdown on the ongoing protests, have led to the killing of 12 monks and supporters. A Japanese journalist was shot dead and hundreds are seriously injured, the state's media in Burma announced.

However, sources from opposition groups in Burma said the death toll will be more than 30.  

The security forces have been raiding several monasteries across Burma.  Hundreds of monks were beaten up and arrested.

The military regime also arrested several politicians, student leaders and other pro-democracy activists in Burma since the protests over the fuel price increase began in Burma began on August 19. – Khonumthung.
