Peaceful demonstration in capital of Chin state
September 5, 2007 - Around 25 people from the NLD along with locals held a peaceful rally in Hakha, capital of Chin state at 11 a.m. (Burma standard time) yesterday in the wake of a spate of protests in many cities across Burma.
The protestors in Chin state staged a peaceful march along the Boygoke main road to the Township Peace and development Council (TPDC) office in Hakha, demanding a roll back in the price of petroleum products and the consequent increase in prices of essential commodities price. They also demanded a halt to the municipalities collecting tax from people and government employees so as to enjoy the same privileges as employees did in mainland Burma.
The demonstration was called off at 12:45 p.m. yesterday as U Khin Maung Win, president of TPDC from Hakha, agreed to submit the demands of protesters to the central military brass in Nay Pyi Daw, the new administrative capital of Burma.
"We expect the junta will pay attention and take up our demands as it is in the people's interest", said U Van Lian, president of National League for Democracy in Hakha.
"If they fail to take action on our demands, we will continue our protests in the future," U Van Lian added
Meanwhile, the military junta has warned the people in Matupi town, the second capital of Chin state, not to resort to public protests.
The increase in fuel prices by the junta in August triggered peaceful protests in many cities in Burma. Military authorities, with the help of its thugs from the USDA and Swan-Aa-Shin arrested over a 100 protesters including prominent activists Min Ko Naing and Ko Ko Kyi. – Khonumthung.
