Authorities restrict maize and bean transport to Mizoram

January 8, 2009: The Immigration Department at the Indo-Myanmar border trade no. 2 gate has stopped all maize and bean items from being transported to Mizoram. These come from Kalemyo, Sagaing Division, Chin state.

The restriction on export of maize and bean was imposed last November, but the traders did not know and didn't have any information about it. That is why they had transported 600 bags of maize and 200 bags of beans through Kalemyo and Chin state for selling it in Mizoram state, India.

"We are still stocking up here for more than a month, spending Kyat 3000 for daily food without tea and other consumable items. Our vegetable of maize and bean also began to be spoilt. It will be terrible if it rains. Even if we go to ask the authorities to release our items; they do not say anything as they have seized it.  We don't know how they will handle this situation, said one of the traders.

There is no information about the reason for restricting maize and bean exports to Mizoram now. No one knows when the authorities will open the gate for it to come in, he added.

In fact, the traders do not have much capital. Their items are purchased from farmers in Kalemyo areas, and they used to sell in Mizoram state.

Burmese people are selling and transporting goods to Mizoram state as they face financial crisis and no jobs are available to provide for their families. - Khonumthung News
