Regime collects donation for MWAF head office

May 30, 2009: The Burmese military junta authorities of Tidim Town Peace and Development Council (TPDC) are collecting Kyat 350 from people 15 years and above as donation for the Myanmar Women's Affairs Federation (MWAF) in Tidim town, western Burma. The donation has to be given to the municipal office before the end of May.

According to Mr. Aung Zaw Moe, chairman of TPDC collecting money is the responsibility of  Mrs. Cing Ngaih Lun, secretary of the Women’s Affair Federation in Tidim.

“Mrs. Cing Ngaih Lun has come and ordered our village chairman to collect the money from among women in our area before the end of May. She said that it is an order from the higher authorities,” said one of village chairman.

They are collecting donations from members of Myanmar Women's Affairs Federation and outsiders as well. At the same time they are forcing women to enroll in the Federation by filling up forms.

“In our group three villages are included. Our village has already paid Kyat 89,000 to civic office. I don’t know what  other groups have paid. We are told to force women in our village to fill up the enrollment form,” said the village chairman.

All local members in MWAF are confused regarding the matter and they cannot believe it is a demand from their head office.

“All amounts will go to the higher authorities. We don’t even know how MWAF is functioning for us and what they are actually doing,” said a local woman.

Similarly, a teacher at Falam town said that they are selling special issue books of different subjects in government schools to the student as Kyat 300 to 1000 a book as donation to the  Falam Township MWAF.
