Authorities collect money for last year's office expenditure
February 7, 2008 - Local authorities in Chin state, Burma collected money from people in order to recover last year's expenditure on state guests who visited Thangtlang. The funds were allegedly overspent.
The Township Peace and Development Council (TPDC) office in Thangtlang Township is said to have overspent the office fund for state guests who frequently visited the area last year, according to a source close to TPDC office.
Though the source did not reveal details of the amount of money the authorities spent last year, the overspent funds for state visitors seems to have left the TPDC authorities in huge debt.
"They never revealed how much they spent and how many times the state guests came," said a local.
The authorities, finally, targeted the people to make for over expenditure.
Khuang Hlei Thang, chairman of the Thangtlang TPDC, issued an order to the Quarter and villager heads to collect Kyat 2,000 per household from the locals in Thangtlang Township.
"It is not possible to defy the order, we have to pay though we do not want to do so," a local said.
Moreover, the quarter and village authorities were reportedly instructed to pay the collected money straight to the TPDC chairman.
Apparently, villagers from remote areas in Thangtlang Township are facing trouble in meeting the authorities demand as they are affected by a famine like situation in Chin state. – Khonumthung.
