The increased supply of pigs to Mizoram state, northeast India from Chin state and the rate of purchase of pigs for pork in central Burma has led to the price of pigs to skyrocket in Chin state, according to a pig supplier in Chin state.

In Chin state even the price of a piglet recently went up to Kyat 60,000 from Kyat 30,000 last year, according to a local.

The pig business in Chin state seems to be thriving.

"With the sale of pigs shooting up the pig business here is very active and profitable," a pig breeder in Hakha, capital of Chin state said.

Most of the pig dealers in Kalay town in Sagaing division who engage in pork business come and purchased pigs mainly from Thangtlang, Hakha and Falam areas, according to locals in Chin state.

Moreover, the locals from remote areas of Chin state such as Tedim, Falam, Thangtlang, Matupi and Paletwa Townships living near the Indo–Burma border also supplied pigs raised in the backyard to neighbouring Mizoram.

Each week around 200 of pigs from Chin state are said to be brought into Mizoram, a pig dealer in Mizoram said.

The current price of pork in Mizoram state has touched Rs. 140 per kg from Rs. 120 last year. – Khonumthung.
